How long until I see an improvement?
It depends on Google, but a well-configured profile usually gains visibility within days of being optimized, not instantly.
GUIDE
When someone searches 'restaurant near me' or 'spa near me', Google Maps decides which businesses to show first. Here's what Google looks at to choose, and what you can do to make that business yours.
Google Maps ranks results based on how complete and active your profile is, how relevant your category is to the search, and how close you are to the person searching. An incomplete profile, with the wrong category or no recent activity, almost always ranks lower, even if the business itself is excellent.
Exact business name, correct address, up-to-date hours, an accurate (not generic) category, and an active contact number. If any of these is missing, mistyped, or doesn't match what's on your website, Google gives your profile less weight.
Profiles with recent photos and several genuine reviews tend to rank higher than ones with none. It doesn't need to be perfect: just add real photos of your business and ask happy customers to leave a review.
If you deliver or cover a wide area beyond your storefront, properly setting your service area helps you show up in searches from nearby neighborhoods that don't exactly match your registered address.

Not necessarily. A complete, active profile can rank well in regular results without paid ads — advertising is a separate option, not a requirement.
Google Maps also supports service-area businesses with no public-facing location, hiding the exact address while still showing your coverage area.
